Dairy Industry Award presented for almost 4 decades service

Dedicating more than 37 years of service to the cheese industry, there is no doubt that Peter Young is the worthy recipient of this year’s Dairy Industry Award at the 2011 Nantwich International Cheese Show.

Peter’s long established career began in April 1974 when he walked out of the family ‘station master’s house, over the railway line and into the nearby Aspatria creamery.  Like most new starters at the time, his first job was on the de-slatting cheese line but his potential was clearly evident and Peter was quickly chosen to become a cheese maker in the vat room.

In 1984, he moved to Hartington where he was responsible for the stilton stores and stock control whilst also assuming the role of Health & Safety officer for the site. His efforts in this area were awarded by Dairy Crest in 1987 when he won the group Health and Safety officer of the year award. 

This successful period at Hartington was followed by a stint at the Maelor creamery but in 1999, Peter returned to Hartington to run the additives operation. 

In February 2002, Peter joined Belton Cheese in an operations role undertaking various jobs including packing, cheese grading, selection and stock control. For the past nine years, he has dedicated himself tirelessly to the business, working behind the scenes helping to make the operation a success.

There is no doubt that Peter is  held in esteem at all levels of Belton Cheese, is highly respected by his peers in the industry and has been described as hardworking, loyal and steadfast with a great eye for detail and very passionate about the industry. He is simply someone you would want around you when there’s a problem. For those who know him, Peter is a popular figure and many have gained from his knowledge and advice over the years. He continues to operate with an enthusiasm that is hard to match and with great modesty would always opt to stay out of the limelight.

This award is the proof and recognition of the life long effort and dedication Peter Young has put into the cheese industry for almost four decades making him a very worthy winner.
