Barn Owls – 2009
After last year’s success we were hopeful that at least one of our boxes would be used again this year.
In June the boxes were checked, one box was being used by squirrels and there were thought to be two owlets in the box which was occupied by the owls last year.
John from the Shropshire Barn Owl Trust came again in mid-July to check on them, and successfully ringed three owlets although one of them was very small. John’s fears were realised when he checked again to find the smallest had died.
We are hopeful that the youngsters fledged successfully and that we will be lucky enough for Barn Owls to take up residence again next year.
If you think you have land suitable for barn owls, please think about getting in touch with your local wildlife trust or contacting the Barn Owl Trust via their website: www.barnowltrust.org.uk
